Calvert Conniff, better known as Cal, was a remarkable leader in skiing during the 20th century. Conniff was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, on February 10, 1930, and died in Kennebunk, Maine, on January 7, 2021.
Conniff’s skiing career was long and varied, involving competitive skiing, ski journalism, and managing ski areas. Conniff produced his own television show called “Skier’s Corner” and later was retained by the New York Times and Snow Country Magazine. Conniff served as the President and Executive Director of the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) for 18 years, leading the ski areas of America. Following retirement from the NSAA, he formed his own consulting company. He also published Skiing in Massachusetts in 2007, a pictorial history, and served as president of the New England Ski Museum.
Conniff led a life dedicated to spreading the joy of skiing. He founded the Gold Pass fundraiser, which benefits the U.S. Ski Team. He established the Cal Conniff Grant Program with the New England Ski Museum to finance the preservation of ski history. Conniff will be remembered as a great advocate of skiing across the world.
