Siegfried “Sig” Buchmayr was born in 1906 in Holf Gastein, Austria, and died in a tragic car accident in 1964. Siegfried was an accomplished businessman and ski instructor known for owning his own ski brand. In his early life in Austria, Sig competed as a ski jumper and racer.
Buchmayr became a ski instructor at Peckett’s on Sugar Hill and later director of the revered ski school. After leaving Peckett's on Sugar Hill, he worked at Fred Pabst’s Big Bromley in Manchester, Vermont.
Buchmayr is most known for creating his eponymous brand of ski attire and merchandise. His brand grew rapidly and was offered at several ski slopes across the northeast. Buchmayr had his own shop in Manhattan next to Saks Fifth Avenue between Fifth and Madison Avenue, as well as locations in Yonkers, New York; West Orange, New Jersey; and Warren, Vermont.
Siegfried Buchmayer’s contributions brought fashion and style to skiing. He was elected to the U.S. Ski Hall of Fame in 1977.
