Charles Minot Dole, better known as Minnie, is remembered as a leader in skiing safety and education. In 1938, he founded the National Ski Patrol, which provides emergency care and first aid training to ski patrols at ski areas around the country. Dole served as its first director until 1950. He was inspired to found the National Ski Patrol based on his own experience with breaking his ankle, as well as the tragic death of Frank Edson during a ski race.
Dole was instrumental in the formation of the 10th Mountain Division during World War II, a mountaineering unit that trained to ski and traverse Alpine terrain.
Dole was born on April 18, 1899, in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, and died on March 14, 1976, in Greenwich, Connecticut. His life and legacy with the National Ski Patrol keeps countless skiers safe each year.
